Safer Business Conference 2023

The Durham Police & Crime Commissioner’s Office in partnership with National Business Crime Solutions (NBCS) will host the conference at the Aycliffe Glow Venue on 4 May 2023.

Safer Business is a key priority area for Joy Allen (pictured) Durham Police and Crime Commissioner.

This free conference is an opportunity to hear from a range of keynote speakers on topics aimed at keeping businesses, staff, and colleagues safe from crime, abuse, and other emerging threats.

There will also be opportunities to share how crime issues affects businesses and organisations to ensure the best and most appropriate response.

Themes for the day include:

Counter Terrorism and Martins Law
Hear from Counter Terror regional expert on how Martyn’s law (formerly the protect duty) will impact on business, who will be in scope? how it will work? how and who will enforce it? and how business will be supported?

Local Authority leads in County Durham and Darlington will showcase the local perspective, the work being done to prepare and support available for local business.

Domestic abuse – protecting colleagues and staff
Presentation from Fiona Bowman on the innovative ways in which business and employers can support their colleagues and staff who may be the victims of domestic violence and abuse.

Hear from Durham County Council and their innovative approach to supporting their staff through their Domestic Abuse Champions network.

Protecting your business from crime, abuse and anti-social behaviour, the importance of crime reporting and identify and managing offenders

A chance to hear from keynote speaker Senior CO-OP National Lead and their approach to tackling violence and abuse against staff.

Senior Durham Police will speak on the importance of reporting crime, and the National Business Crime Solutions model for co-ordination of efforts around tackling the most prolific offenders causing significant damage to retail business.

Cybercrime – the growing threat to business and organisations
The North East Business Resilience Centre (NEBRC) is a not-for-profit collaboration between policing, academia, and the private sector, which exists to help small businesses become more cyber secure.

Join D. Insp Martin Wilson and his team of ethical hackers, to discuss how these crimes occur and the motivations of cyber criminals. The team will demo a live hack and explain simple things to keep business, friends, and family safe online.
